Sarchí is best known as a crafts center, with many family-operated woodworking factories producing wooden bowls, chairs and other items.  The most popular items are "carretas", elaborately painted wooden oxcarts that traditionally carried coffee from the highlands down to the port on the Pacific Coast.  This one is billed as the World's Largest Painted Oxcart, in the central square of Sarchí .
