At more than 3,700 miles in length, the Great Wall isn't actually one structure but a collection of many defensive installations.  The earliest sections built of wood, rammed earth, and stone have deteriorated.  Later sections such as this Badaling section Pam stands on was made of brick.  Even this has required restoration, but is awe-inspiring as it stretches as far as the eye can see.
