Beijing 2002

A symbol of Chinese genius, the present Great Wall dates mainly to the Ming Dynasty.  The wall was garrisoned by up to a million soldiers and was complemented by over 1,000 fortified passes and 10,000 beacon towers.  It is a matter for debate whether the wall was ever truly successful as a line of defense, but it was constructed to keep the barbaric Mongolians out of the Middle Kingdom.
