This painting in the Gonggar Chode Monastery a Tibetan 'sky burial'. Soil and wood were resources which could not be wasted. After death, the body would be kept in a sitting position while a lama recited prayers from the 'Tibetan Book of the Dead'. After three days, the soul was considered to have left the body and undertakers chopped up the body for the vultures to eat.
